Als Ende 2013 die ersten Multicopter, auch Drohnen genannt, auf den Markt kamen, war ich einer der wenigen Fotografen, die den Erfolg dieser „Wundertechnik“ kommen sahen. Nachdem ich viel Geld, Zeit und Nerven in einen selbst zusammengebauten 8-motorigen Multicopter investiert hatte und das 15 Kilogramm schwere Gerät fehlerfrei lief, nahm ich die fliegende Kamera mit nach Namibia, Island, Norwegen, Schottland, Chile und Argentinien sowie mit in die Schweiz. Die neu gewonnene Perspektive war trotz der extremen, logistischen Probleme ein Segen. Endlich waren Bilder möglich, die bislang nur mit Hubschraubern oder Kleinflugzeugen machbar gewesen wären. Doch im Gegensatz zu Fotorundflügen, die bloß bei guten und hellen Wetterbedingungen stattfanden, war die Drohne zu jeder Tages- und Jahreszeit startbereit. Während eines Jahres konzentrierte ich mich voll und ganz auf die Drohnenfotografie und ergänzte so mein Portfolio entsprechend. Schon im Jahr 2015 war die Freude an der Technik dann vorbei, denn was anfänglich mit Freude bei den Zuschauern und anwohnenden Menschen begann, endete, aufgrund millionenfacher Verkäufe kleinerer Drohnen, in einem Wald voller Verbotstafeln, böser Blicke und Drohungen. Mittlerweile fliege ich ausnahmslos dort, wo mich niemand sieht oder hört. Ganz auf die „Perspektive Luft“ verzichten kann und will ich jedoch nicht mehr.

Schnell erkannte ich, dass der wirkliche Vorteil einer Kamera in der Luft vor allem im FILM sichtbar wird. Dank 3-Motorigen Stabilisatoren, genannt Gimbals ist es heute möglich, trotz grosser Geschwindigkeit und Böen einen perfekt ruhigen und stabilen Film aus der Luft aufzunehmen. Da ich berufsbedingt überall mit der Drohne unterwegs war, sind in den vergangenen Jahren atemberaubende Drohnen-Filme (Footage) in 4K entstanden, die mittlerweile bei Firmen wie dem BBC, SRF, Samsung und anderen grossen Firmen verwendet werden.

When the very first multicopters (“drones”) hit the market at the end of 2013, I was one of the few photographers who had foreseen the success of these amazing gadgets. After investing much time, money, and aggravation in a self-assembled eight-rotor multicopter, when the 15 kg (33 lb.) device was operating without malfunction, I brought the flying camera on trips to Namibia, Iceland, Norway, Scotland, Chile, Argentina, and Switzerland. In spite of the logistical nightmare, the newly acquired perspective was a godsend. Finally, images could captured that before would have necessitated a helicopter or small airplane. Photography flights would only ever lift off in good, bright weather conditions. But now with the drone, flight became possible any time. For a year, I devoted all my efforts toward drone photography and complemented my portfolio accordingly. But by 2015, the technology had lost its charm. With millions of drones sold, what first had wowed onlookers and locals now became the target of a thicket of prohibiting signs as well as threats and dirty looks. Today, I make no exceptions: I only fly where nobody can see or hear. The “perspective from the air” is one I cannot and will not do without.
From Photography to Videography
I quickly realized that the real advantage of a camera in the air is especially visible in the FILM. Thanks to 3-motor stabilizers, called gimbals, it is possible today to record a perfectly smooth and stable film from the air despite the high speed and gusts. Since I was traveling everywhere with the drone because of my job, in the past few years breathtaking drone movies (footage) were created in 4K, which are now used by companies like BBC, SRF (Swiss Television), Samsung and other big companies.
